Care Tips for Succulents

5 Easy Care Tips To Keep Them Thriving

Succulents are often called the gateway plant, they're  hardy, stylish, and full of personality. But if you’ve ever brought one home only to watch it shrivel, you’re not alone. Many plant parents assume succulents are foolproof, only to discover that too much love (as in over-watering) can quickly end them.

At House of Agave, we believe every home deserves a little live greenery, and succulents are the perfect way to start. Whether you’re adding a pop of life to your desk or arranging a display, these resilient plants thrive with just a few mindful habits. Here are five easy-care tips to keep your succulents happy.

1. Provide Plenty of Light (But Not Too Much)

Succulents love bright light; it’s what gives them those bold shapes and vibrant colors. Place them near a south- or west-facing window where they’ll receive 4–6 hours of indirect sunlight each day.

But many people tuck their succulents into dark corners, which leaves them stressed out, weak, and pale. On the flip side, some varieties can get scorched by too much sun. The sweet spot: bright, indirect light or a sunny window. If your home or office doesn't have enough natural light, consider a small grow light. It’s an inexpensive way to mimic the desert sun indoors.

2. Water Sparingly

The #1 mistake with succulents is over-watering. Unlike tropical plants, succulents store water in their leaves and stems. They actually prefer to dry out between waterings. The pain point: well-meaning plant parents water too often, drowning roots and causing rot.

A simple rule: water only when the soil is bone dry. Stick your finger an inch deep — if it feels dry, it’s time to water. Always let excess water drain away from the saucer.

3. Use the Right Soil and Pots

Succulents need fast-draining soil to thrive. Standard potting mix holds too much moisture, which can suffocate roots. Instead, choose a cactus or succulent-specific mix. For extra drainage, add perlite or coarse sand.

4. Don’t Forget to Feed Them

Yes, succulents need food too! During their active growing season (spring and summer), feed with a diluted fertilizer once a month. In fall and winter, they rest and don’t need extra nutrients.

Many succulent owners assume they don't need fertilizer, which leaves them slow-growing and dull. A little boost in the warm months brings out their best colors and encourages healthy growth.

5. Give Them Breathing Room

Succulents don’t love being crowded. Airflow helps prevent pests and diseases, and spacing gives each plant room to show off its unique shape.

If you’re styling a shelf or tabletop, group your succulents aesthetically but give each one its own spot. Over-crowded arrangements can be beautiful but can be tricky to maintain long-term.
